The blocks themselves come in a variety of types as well, which means that they are liable to provide you with beneficial bonuses, or even hurt your chances by messing with your ability to keep playing. There are hundreds of levels to enjoy, each one of which presents you with a different block layout and a slightly upgraded difficulty level. Hence, the goal is to obliterate all the bricks in the level and collect the power-ups they drop.
The underlying formula is obviously untouched, since you still have to use a paddle-like machine to bounce a ball up and down, but everything else has been significantly modified.

Games like Breakout and Arkanoid may not look like much nowadays, but they were quite revolutionary at the time.
